Since
I haven’t been able to keep up with the box office over the last 6
weeks or so because Meeyeon and I got married, I will do an overview of
January, which will be below last week’s commentary.
Quite a surprise last weekend: where did Voice of A Murderer (그놈 목소리)
come from? There was talk about it in Korea last month when I was
there, but I for one, didn’t expect it to do so well. At 972,620
admissions in 3 days, well, that is a very promising sign. In fact I
have just read it has generated 1,322,897 since it was released. Being
screened on 530 screens does help though (not all cinemas are included
in the domestic box office as they are waiting for the automatic
tallying system), but it is a risk on CJ’s part. You don’t screen a
film on that many screens, unless you are confident it will succeed.
The gamble has clearly paid off. It was 4th in the World Box office
last weekend making $8,903.323 with a 3-day gross of $6,735.543. Year
-on-Year performance was up 6.2%. CJ Entertainment’s fierce marketing
machine has obviously helped. Starring one of Korea’s finest actors,
Seol Kyeoug-gu (설경구) (Public Enemy, Another Public Enemy, Oasis),
it follows a famous news anchor, Han Kyung-bae. His son is kidnapped.
The kidnapper demands a $100,000 ransom and as he is continually
outsmarting the police, they are left with few options. Increasingly
worried Han Kyung-bae is then forced to listen to instructions to meet
him directly. It certainly sounds compelling and I can imagine the
Korean audience vigorously engaged throughout the 122 minutes.
Voice of A Murderer (그놈 목소리)
The perfect couple (최강 로맨스) has also performed well. Perhaps not against Voice of A Murderer (그놈 목소리) ,
but after two weeks, it is still generating 336,462 admissions. It is
directed by Kim Jeong-woo (김정우) and starring Jeon Soo-Kyeong (전수경)
(Public Enemy) and Lee Dong –Wook (이동욱) (Arang)
As for other films, which have certainly felt the competition, Curse of the Golden Flower (滿城盡帶黃金甲) is still performing reasonably well. Click opened
on 155 screens with almost 148,000 admissions – not fantastic, but not
a failure either, at least at this stage. After a staggering 8 weeks, A 200- Pound Beauty (미녀는 괴로워) is still fighting on. Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto is hanging on and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it disappear in the next week. The animation pair; Robot Taekwon V (로보트 태권V) andYobi The Five Tailed Fox (천년여우 여우비) are by no means finished. Mapado 2 (마파도 2),
which I have also written about in the January review, has hit the
bottom after 3 weeks. But as you can see from the poster, it does look
rather funny. Finally Miss Potter, which I have also very briefly mentioned in the January review, after 2 weeks, it has slipped to 10th place.
Mapado 2 (마파도 2) directed by Lee Sang-hoon (이상훈)
I
also want to apolgise for some anomalies, which you may find in
comparring results. I am still unclear how this happens. Perhaps there
are some errors when inputting the results, or more likely, each source
locates different times during the weekend, which would explain the
results. Furthermore films are often released on a Thursday, which also
causes some confusion There is also the problem I highlighted earlier
that not all cinemas are fitted with an automatic tallying system,
though this is rising. Anyway, I use the Korean Film Council, which as
far as I am aware are reliable as they come. Let me know if you think
otherwise....
January Review
Unsurprisingly Night At The Museum
starring Ben Stiller has performed very well indeed, remaining at No.1
for 3 weeks and almost hitting $30 million. This is very impressive for
a Non-Korean film. However, this isn’t the star of the show. It goes by
the name of A 200-pound Beauty (미녀는 괴로워) (Grammatically
correct title). It has generated 6.4 million admissions to date and
becomes, if I not mistaken, the 8th most successful Korean film
surpassing Shiri.
It’s blend of hilarious comedy, delicate romance, fantastic sound track
(Maria! – it can be heard in every karaoke (노래방) in South Korea) and
powerful messages has arguably driven the success.
A 200-pound Beauty (미녀는 괴로워) directed by Kim Yong-hwa (김용화)
Koreans desire for fantasy is clearly evident with the release of Eragon,
which shot to the top, but was very short lived. 3 weeks had passed and
it went from top to upper middle and then low and behold, bottom.
Hollywood films such as Déjà vu and Blood Diamond have also failed to ignite. Casino Royale
has been a disappointment for Sony Pictures – arguably the finest Bond
of recent years, but unlike most territories, it didn’t hit No.1 and
hasn’t really penetrated the Korean film market. Miss Potter opened poorly and fell even further last weekend.
Much like Radio Star (라디오 스타) last year, Herb (허브),
which has received on the whole positive reviews and although it hasn’t
broke to the No.1 spot, it has remained consistent. But its topic of a
20 year girl with a mental age of a 7 year old having to become
independent after her mother is diagnosed with cancer is not really the
ideal film for a night out. However, like Oasis (오아시스) and Marathon (말아톤),
its inspiration drawn from the powerful performances has prevented the
film from flopping and I can see it being awarded for its performances,
particularly to Kang Hye-jeong who will shock fans of Oldboy (올드보이).
Herb (허브) directed by Heo In-moo (허인무)
Project Makeover (aka Go Go Sister) (언니가 간다) and The Old Garden (오래된 정원)
opened disappointedly in the first weekend of January and then
vanished. The first merely made 134,675 admissions after 3 days, which
won’t please cinema service. Starring Ko So-young (고소영), it follows a
30 year old fed up with her life, largely because she failed to date
Ha-ni, who became a star. She is then given a chance to go back and
‘change’ her life. If that doesn’t sound cliché, what does? It could be
good fun though. The Old Garden (오래된 정원)
on the other hand is quite the opposite – it is embedded with very deep
political and social issues. Director Lim Sang-soo (임상수) is not exactly
new to tackling these issues. His last film, The President’s last Bang (그때 그사람들)
arguably caused more controversy than any other – it was forced to cut
3 mins 50 secs, which incidentally has now been reversed and can now
been seen in its entirety. Returning back to his latest film, at
136,218 admissions after 3 days of release, it is perhaps too
political. Mind you these films were released at a time where there was
fierce competition: Night at The Museum, A-200 Pound Beauty (미녀는 괴로워) , My Wife is a Gangster 3 (Jopog Manura 3 (조폭 마누라).
The 1976 re-release of animated Robot Taekwon V (로보트 태권V),
whilst not dominating the box office has remained mid-way, which will
be encouraging for Cinema Service. On the note of animation, Yobi The Five Tailed Fox (천년여우 여우비) directed by Lee Seong-gang (이성강) hasn’t exactly done badly - $3.5 million.
Mapodo 2 (마파도 2) did an Eragon,
quite literally. Starting on top, slipping to third and then a nosedive
to the bottom, though not quite. After three weeks it exited the top 10
in 9th position, rather than the daunting 10th place. Nonetheless it
clearly indicates that Korean audiences were expecting much more than
what was delivered.
China has been heading their way into the Korean market recently. Co-productions between the nations are becoming more popular. My Wife is a Gangster 3 (Jopog Manura 3) (조폭 마누라),
which starts Taiwanese Shu Qi. It started off very strong, but then
tailed off, probably once Koreans found it was not up to par with the
original. Mind you, neither was the 2nd one! The Restless
(중천 (中天)) directed by Jo Dong-oh (조동오) and starring Kim Tae-hee (김태희)
also followed suit. Distributed by CJ Entertainment, it was heavily
marketed, not least through the films song, which I might add, is
terrible. But breaking the $10 million barrier, whilst not a great
achievement for a film of this calibre, is not a disaster.
The Restless (중천 (中天)) directed by Jo Dong-oh (조동오)
Battle of Wits starring
Ahn Seong-Ki alongside Andy Lau is another collaboration between China
and S. Korea, but Japan and Hong Kong have also been involved. It
opened in 7th on the weekend of January 12th -14th, but then
disappeared.
Chinese film, Curse of the Golden Flower (滿城盡帶黃金甲) , directed by critically acclaimed Yimou Zhang (Hero & House of Flying Daggers)
opened well and still is, though it won’t be until next week where it
will become clear how well it has done. CJ Entertainment have hardly
refrained themselves when it comes to advertising - everywhere is
littered with the film’s spectacular images.
It has been an interesting month. At its early stages, the box office was dominated by Hollywood film, Night At The Museum. It wasn’t long however when a film called A-200 Pound Beauty (미녀는 괴로워)
broke to the scene and left its competition sitting with genuine envy.
It is still performing well out-grossing any other film, both domestic
and foreign. Well, Voice of A Murder (그놈 목소리) may
well go on to out perform it, but only time will tell. As for the rest
of the films, which included some well-anticipated films including
sequels, have literally come and gone.

After
last weeks winner, one would expect it to roll on for at least another
week in the No.1 spot, but it appears to have lost about half its
revenue. It is to be expected that it would loose some drive, but I for
one, wasn't expecting it to slip significantly. This does suggest that Voice of A Murderer (그놈 목소리) is perhaps an interesting film on paper, but little else is going for it. Mind
you, I am purely speculating here and next week is holiday weekend -
new year! So it may regain some lost momentum. Therefore its real test
will be if it bounces back up. At present, it has generated 2.4 million
admissions. If it makes it over 3, which it is likely to do, CJ will
probably be content.
As for No.1 A day For an Affair, which is also known as A Good Day to Have an Affair (바람 피기 좋은 날) opens on just over 380,000 admissions. This stars Kim Hye-soo (김혜수) who has recently enjoyed tremendous success in Tazza (aka War of the Flower) (타짜).
This romantic comedy follows two unhappy wives' who are trying to find
true love under different online names: 'Small bird' and 'Drew' - quite
hilarious!
A Good Day to Have an Affair (바람 피기 좋은 날)
Directed by Jang Moon-il (장문일)
Master Kim's (김관장 대 김관장 대 김관장)
also enjoyed some success - not far from hitting 300,000 admissions in
its opening weekend. Written and directed by Park Seong-gyoon (박성균),
it seeks to make its audience laugh through martial art comedy. Quite
simple; 3 men with the same name, 3 different fighting techniques and
one winner.
Master Kim's (김관장 대 김관장 대 김관장)
Written and directed by Park Seong-gyoon (박성균)
The Hollywood adaption Charlotte's Web managed to do reasonably well on 147 screens. Click is hanging in there, whereas A 200-pound beauty (미녀는 괴로워) is still going strong after 9 weeks. Even in London, you can hear "Maria"!. CJ will be delighted that Curse of the Golden Flower (滿城盡帶黃金甲) is remaining determined. It's not a huge success, but like I said last week, neither is it a failure.
Yobi The Five Tailed Fox (천년여우 여우비) is not doing too badly either.
Finally, Apocalyto to much surprise hasn't disappeared just yet.
As
I pointed out earlier, next weekend is holiday weekend, so new year
will no doubt be celebrated by some, or even by many, by visiting the
cinema, so in theory like Chusok (Korean thanksgiving), admissions
should be well on the rise.

Quite
a disappointing weekend for lunar new year. That said, last weekend
doesn't take into account Monday's takings, but nevertheless, audience
numbers should have been higher than they are.
As for the
films, the box office splits into two: domestic and international. This
will please individuals, like myself, who contest the screen quota -
mind you, do they need it?
Racing to the top is Miracle on 1st Street (1번가의 기적) directed by Yoo Seong-hyeob (유성협) and starring Im Chang-jeong (임창정) and Ha Ji-won (하지원) (Duelist (형사)) whilst Highway Star (복면 달호) directed by Kim Hyun-soo (김현수) & Kim Sang-chan (김상찬) opened in 2nd place. A Day For an Affair (바람 피기 좋은 날) and Voice of A Murderer (그놈 목소리) meanwhile
fight with one another for 3rd and 4th places, respectively. The latter
has certainly been effected by word-of-mouth, but not in a positive
way, unfortunately. Word-of-mouth is becoming increasingly powerful in
Korea - on one hand it brings little known films to the spotlight and
they go from just a 'regular' film to a massive hit. The King and the Clown (왕의 남자), Tazza (타짜), A 200-pound beauty (미녀는 괴로워)
are some examples (incidentally the latter hit has its first week out
of the top 10 after more than 9 weeks on release). But word-of-mouth
can also kill a film. Voice of A Murderer (그놈 목소리), which opened on not far of hitting 1 million admissions in two days is now falling further and further behind. A day For An Affair (바람 피기 좋은 날) is slpping, but no more than expected, but neither is it performing wonderfully. Master Kims aka Three Kims (김관장 대 김관장 대 김관장) is performing likewise.

Miracle on 1st Street (1번가의 기적) Highway Star (복면 달호) directed by directed by Yoo Seong-hyeob (유성협)
Kim Hyun-soo (김현수) &
Kim Sang-chan (김상찬)
As for the bottom half, Bridge To Terabithia leads the non-Korean films. Charlotte's Web
is just about hanging in there - not really performed, especially given
the wide-audience it attracts, not least in holiday season. The Queen meanwhile, which is expected to get an oscar for Helen Mirren's performance is doing reasonably well on 41 screens.

As you can see Miracle on 1st Street (1번가의 기적) is
still performing very well indeed - it has now generated just over 1.6
million admissions, which can only be good news for CJ. Oh Boy, they
are doing well at the minute. Voice of a Murderer (그놈 목소리)
- although it has slipped considerably following its phenominal opening
week due to word-of mouth (it appears that way), has made almost 3
million admissions.
Highway Star (복면 달호) and A Good Day for An Affair (바람 피기 좋은 날) are
also performing nicely with total admissions of just over 1 million
($6.28 million) and almost 1.6 million ($10.3 million), respectively.
Dreamgirls, which is also distributed by CJ Entertainment has snuck in just behind Highway Star (복면 달호).
It is worth mentioning that this film has the highest screen average of
a staggering $10,154, which will properly mean it will be released on
more screens this weekend. The Oscar coverage has evidently made an
impact, though it hasn't done the same for Babel.
Hotel M: Gangster's Last Law (마강호텔) written and directed by Choi Seong-cheol (최성철) is a disappointing opening for Showbox, but it could of done worse.
Hotel M: Gangster's Last Law (마강호텔)
Written and directed by Choi Seong-cheol (최성철)
Other Hollywood openers haven't done wonderfully; Bridge to Terabithia and The Texas Chainsaw Massacare: The Beginning are likely to be shortlived.
Master Kims (김관장 대 김관장 대 김관장) is
on its way out of the top 10 in 10 place on its third week. This will
be another disappointment for ShowBox. Mind you, they must still be
enjoying the success of A 200-Pound Beauty (미녀는 괴로워)
