Ironically as The Host finally slips to second place, it has broken the all the all time record for the most successful domestic film in Korean history.

"The monster sci-fi film surpassed previous record-holder King And The Clown’s 12.3 million admissions on Saturday afternoon (Sept 2) with 12.37 million admissions, and it’s estimated that a further 90,000 were added on Sunday.

The Host has been leaping over other previous records set by Silmido and Taegukgi, and reached the 12.3 million mark in a record 38 days as opposed to sleeper hit King And The Clown’s 112 days."

Jean Noh (ScreenDaily - Subscription required)

The film also saw its release in Japan last weekend, but at present there is no figures to ascertain how successful it has been in Korea's powerful neighbour. But if their keen interest into the Korean wave, The Hallyu has got anything to go by, I expect it to follow a similar line of success.

Meanwhile the Japanese film, The Sinking of Japan opens at No. 1, but Korean films are clearly dominating the box office with 7 films in the top 10 in addition to a Hollywood remake, The Lake House. Incedently as you can see this has opened at No.6, which isn't terrific especially seeing it is Korean remake, but when you see the competition it has to compete against, one can see why.

Lump of Sugar and No Mercy for the Rudeare doing reasonably well generating $7.5 million and $4 million, respectively. Anything over 3 million is seen as successful and anything over $10 million, a hit. The Host is on a different world. It has probably generated in excess of $85 million at present and is almost certain to be the first Korean film to break the $100 million barrier. The shareholders must be drinking some very expenisve So-Ju.

It seems that the Korean box office is beginning to change following a certain hit dominating the charts for 6 weeks or so.

Cinema Service must be pretty chuffed, since all of their films fall into the top three, though admissions are much lower than in recent weeks. Perhaps the Korean public have had enough of films - no chance! Nevertheless, this is the lowest admissions for some time.

As you can see Between Love and Hate tops the charts with Three Fellas following close by. The Host, currently the most successful domestic hit of all time is comfortably at No.4 behind Sinking of Japan. Hollywood is struggeling to stay in the charts, nevermind top it. Poor reviews have probably not helped The Sentinal and despite being 5 years on, United 93 hasn't really captured audiences.  Meanwhile Lump of Sugar has performed very well to make about $8 million, but will it make $10?

Please forgive me for not having these stats up on time - the film festival has taken a great of my time, but we are now back on track.

Following a very poor weekend, the punters are back in the theatres watching their beloved Korean films. Maundy thursday races to the top with over 600,000 admissions with Puzzle following close behind. Yet another fantastic weekend for Cinema service - I do wonder what kind of bonuses the team behind these releases will be getting....

Between Love and Hate is doing reasnably well for CJ, but they are not the force they use to be. They have had one or two strong releases like Hanbando and A Dirty Carnival, which both generated in excess of $10 million, but it is distributors such as ShowBox and indeed Cinema Service who seem to be making the right moves.

The Host slips to fourth and CJ's Like a Virgin takes its place, which is a little ironic. A little consolation for CJ.

Sinking of Japan has performed fairly well pulling a revenue of $4.5 million, which is by no means fantastic, but more than sufficient for a film that is on foriegn turf.

Hollywood's The Sentinal hasn't really performed at all, but where has it? The makers behind United 93 will no doubt be disappointed, but it is a very different culture and not a film one wants to see for entertainment.

Finally No Mercy For The Rude is hanging in at No.10. A box office total of just short of $5 million is certainly not disappointing, but who knows, perhaps they wanted a little more?

Yet another great weekend for the Korean film industry. The third installment of the Married to the Mafia series has done very well, though it has been released on 436 screens. Nevertheless, ShowBox will be celebrating another successful release, or is this a little premature?

Meanwhile Manudy Thursday is firing on all cylinders with a box office total of almost $9 million after two weeks, which is a massive achievement.

Chinese film, The Banquet has made the No.3 spot, which is encouraging. Between Love and Hate follows close behind as does Mudon.

The Host is beginning to slip out of reach,  but Bong Joon-ho's record breaking hit is still  attracting almost 14,000 admissons on 50 screens.

Critically acclaimed Volver has made it to No.9. It may not sound amazing, but given the fact that it was released on 7 screens, it has done very well indeed. Perhaps Sponge Entertainment should think about releasing it on more screens.

Sinking of Japan is literally sinking out of reach of the Korean market, but it is by no means a disappointment at $4.7 million dollars.

It was a very busy weekend - 6 NEW releases, 4 of which were domestic releases.

CJ must be relieved with a No.1 spot and more so with the $6.5 million in their pocket for The War of Flower. Director Choi Dong-hoon will no doubt be delighted.  Married to Mafia 3 is comfortably positioned at No.2, but the fire power has really dropped, which would suggest word of mouth has not been fantastic.

Maundy Thursday is still attracting the public with a box office revenue of almost $11 million for Prime entertainment

Other new releases including, Radio Star, Mission Sex Control and The Fox Family haven't performed terribly well, even relative to the number of screens they were released on, but with so much competition out there, what do you expect?

Volver is still going fairly strong on 6 screens, but Hollywood's The Ant Bully was only  opened on 95 screens. Perhaps Warner realised it was a bit of a 'Lions Den' last weekend and subsequently distributed it on fewer screens.

A very competative weekend at present and it looks like not even a reduciton of the screen quota can keep Korean films at bay. Hollywood may have had a Tsunami of successes over the summer, but Korean films have fought back with 10 times the fire power.

It has been a very interesting weekend at the box office - the No. 1 opening last week has been released on even more screens (from 406 - 471) and as a result made alot more money. Tazza: The High Rollers (aka The War Of Flowers) is directed by  Choi Dong-hoon (The Big Swindle) who has been comparred to Guy Ritchie has obviously done something right! It has made $20.5 million (almost) to date and is growing by the minute. Please note the number of admissions - 1,036,131. While it is not a record, it is a very handsome return indeed. Word of mouth, media coverage and the internet blogs are working a treat, which suggests this film is not only going to be the centre of attention in Pusan (starts today), but is clearly is a very promising film. Keep a look out.  The King and The Clown was the first to succeed on this formuala - perhaps we are beginning to see a very successful formula in the working.

But while it is worth noting the power of word of mouth, all films have seen an increase one way or another from last week. What is going on? Even the unsuccessful Ant Bully has more than doubled its weekend takings (from 33,422 to 80,720) on 4 fewer screens. Well, it was Chuseok, which is equivilent  to Thanksgiving began on Thursday, so it was a holiday weekend, so with people off from work, which never happens in Korea, families, couples, friends and everyone else have clealry hit the cinemas to escape from their busy lives. Fair play if you ask me! It also worth mentioning that over the last 5 years, comedies have led the box office over lunar holiday weekend, but the sophisticated drama Tazza: The High Rollers (aka The War Of Flowers) is no such film. Does a change to tradition mean a box office phenominan - we will see.

Meanwhile Married to the Mafia, Radio Star and Maundy Thursday are still up there fighting amongst one another. Rob-B-Hood, a Chinese production follows behind the dragon in front and the three tigers that follow.

A very interesting weekend indeed, which goes to show that Korean films are becoming stronger and stronger by the day. Last month saw Korean films having a massive 83 % share.

As you can see, after three weeks Tazza (타짜) is still perforrming very well indeed. You can find some more info on this film below (see Korean film domestic.....)

Radio Star has jumped a place from No.3 to No.2. Although the number of admissions have reduced by 67,000, the number of screens have also been reduced by 29 screens. This equates to a 16.5% decrease in the screen average. It may be a decrease, but a very small one after three weeks at the box office.

World Trade Centre has done considerably bettter than United 93, which failed to ignite when it was released in Korea last month. Perhaps this is down to a more aggresive marketing campaign after UIP realised the 9/11 films are difficult to market in Korea. Or more likely, it is because it features Nicholas Cage who has a Korean wife and incidently, so does the director Oliver Stone. On this note, I found it interesting that it appears to be a Korean tourist who asks the policeman a question when the plane hits the World Trade Centre.

Married to the Mafia 3 and Maundy Thursday are still going strong with them both generating around $15 million to date. Lady in the water, although appears to be struggeling, on 78 screens, it is not doing too badly.

Mission Sex Control on the other hand is not doing so well even though it has been on release for 3 weeks.

Korean film domestic market share up to record a 82.7% in September.

From Movie News

I know I mentioned this is last week, but I really didn't give it the attention it deserves. Incdedently, last week's box office stats will be available as soon as I can sort out a problem I have with the souce (should only be a few days).

As for the box office, it beats the record of 81.4%, which was in February 2004. So where did this 82.7% come from?

It is largely down to The Host, which broke every box office record there is, but it was released in July, so one must ask, what has happened?

If we go back to the summer, Hollywood enjoyed a tsunami of blockbusters, which began with Mission Impossible 3, which generated over $30 million and then The Da Vinci Code arrived, which was soon followed by  Posedion, X-Men: The Last Stand, Superman Returns and finally Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.  All of which took handsome returns - some more than others, but created problems for the Korean film industry nevertheless.  A Dirty Carnival was the only Korean film to come out with a fairly strong return - somewhere in the region of $11 million. Then Hanbando came along, but critics rejected it and although it performed relatively well on its opening weekend with 790,502 admissions, it was a disappointment. But The Host changed everything. It brought back the faith in Korean film industry despite the reduction in the screen quota being introduced. As a result in September, Korean distrbutors such as Cinema Service, Show Box, Lotte Entertainment, Prime Entertainment, MK Pictures and CJ Entertainment loaded their guns and began releasing Korean films like there was no tomorrow. FIlms such as Maunday Thursday, Like a Virgin, Between Love and Hate, Puzzle, Married to the Mafia 3 and later on Tazza: The High Rollers (aka The War Of Flowers) all dominated the top end of the box office. The Korean's also dominated the mid and lower ends of the box office with films such as The Fox Family, Mission Sex Control, Mudon, Three Felas, No Mercy for The Rude, Holy Daddy,  Lump of Sugar and Ice Bar. Not to menton The Host, which was still going stong two months after release.

Tazza: The High Rollers (aka The War Of Flowers). Directed by CHOI Dong-hun

It still looking very good with
Tazza: The High Rollers (aka The War Of Flowers) firmly placed at the top and there is no sign at present to indicate it is slowing down with 4,032,810 admissions to date after 3 weeks at the top. It follows Go-Nee (CHO Seung-woo) who loses his 5 year savings when he goes gambling. He subsequently drinks heavily and unsurprisingly falls into a state of depresssion. But he soon discovers he was swindled and before long he gets training from a Mr. Pyeong (BAEK Yoon-sik) to get his money back and Go-nee becomes famous. There is also some love interest when Ms Jung (KIM Hye-soo) discovers Go-nee. It sounds very interesting. Like I said before, word and mouth and media coverage has obviously boosted sales, which suggests it is certainly worth watching. It is worth noting,
BAEK Yoon-sik  evidently returns to his familar role as the trainer - quite a funny one if his performance in the Art of Fighting has got anything to go by.

Tazza: The High Rollers slips (타짜) to No. 2 on its 4th week and is replaced by another CJ Entertainment feature Rightous Ties directed by Jang Jin (Murder take one).
The trailer is very funny indeed - typical Korean style. No subtitles though.

Radio Star is still up there and DOA: Dead or Alive has made the No.4 spot, which is closely followed by World Trade Centre.

The biggest surprise, which is The Devil Wears Prada. It may have only  attracted 35,247 admissions, but on one screen, is it possible? To be honest, I think this is a typing error somewhere along the lines. Not from me though...

ShowBox will be very disappointed with Gangster High, which generated merely 15,000 admissions on 107 screens. Perhaps this is because the leader, Righteous Ties also explores the gangster theme, so two films for many is evidently too much.

The Devil Wears Prada goes straight to the top, though Rightous Ties is not at all far behind. There is little over 1,000 admissions between them.

Tazza: The High Rollers is still taking in the money despite the fact that it has been on release for 5 weeks. Where did it come from?! We all expected The Host, but for Tazza to take so much money not long after The Host is very impressive indeed.

Traces of Love is a little disappointing as is Hearty Paws, but lets face it, after an opening at Pusan, Trace of Love should have done better. However poor reviews probably haven't helped. Apparently anyone who goes to see the film is adviced to take a box of tissues!

Bothe Radio Star and Maundy Thursday have total box office revenues at 9,283,041 and 14,939,401, respectively which is very encouraging for both parties.
