Pirates of the Caribbean : Dead Man's Chest has produced the strongest opening weekend since the Da Vinci Code was released in May.  It has not only put the Superhero to second place but has also managed to take almost 2 more million dollars than Supernan Returns took last week. That said, however, you have to put this into prosepective -  The Brucheimer production has been released on over 100 more screens, which would  explain the strong box revenue.

Meanwhile as expected A Dirty Carnival is plodding along very nicely at almost 10.5 million dollars - the biggest Korean successs for some time. But expect this to be beaten by Han Ban Do and indeed The HostArang is performing OK, whereas the hype of A.P.T has been a let down with a box office revenue of merely $1.5 million. Poor reviews haven't helped.

Aachi & Ssipak directed by Joe Bum-jin has been a disaster. If you look at the narraitve  this might be because the animation is centred around a futurisitc world powered entirely by human feces. Not quite sure it is the what the Korean public want to see - the $0.5 million box office revenue after two weeks is a clear illustation of this, however, prior to its release 'it was pre-sold to multiple countries and MTV has licensed rights to create an animated series on the same theme and characters.'

Well it appears Korean films are back in the driving seat following a 11 week Hollywood Tsunami, which has left Korean films struggeling for air. It was expected though and understandably, the anxious team that worked on Hanbando will be delighted that their film has shifted the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest  to No.2. The weekend admissions of 790,502 is alot but not outstanding. If you compare this to the Da Vinci Code, in its opening weekend it took 947,711 admissions, which is much higher than what Hanbando took last weekend. That said, however, that was when 79% of screens were reporting. This week, unfortunately for one reason or another, there is only 71% of screens reporting. It is also worth noting that Monday 17th July was a Bank Holiday and as a result, despite Monsoon downpours and flooding, it has mangaged to reach 1.6 mllion admissions, which is a massive achievement. (screendaily.com - Jean Noh)  The aggresive marketing by CJ Entertainment has obviously played down poor reviews.

Meanwhile Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is still performing reasonably well, whereas Superman Returns is beginning to loose momentum. A.P.T on the other hand never really gathered momentum and no doubt ShowBox will be very disappointed.

Another success for CJ Entertainment is A Dirty Carnival, which falls behind the likes of X-Men: The Last Stand by $76,646,  which isn't a great deal. It is arguably the only film that has written off the Hollywood pressure and no doubt writer and director Yoo Ha (유하)  will be congratulated for that.

As you can see Hanbando remains at the top, though the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead's man Chest is not that far behind. However, CJ Entertainment will surely be sitting back with the satisfaction that it has generated almost $14 million in two weeks. The test will be this weekend when the the likes of The Host will surely place Hanbando to No.2 or even lower.

Although the Hollywood studios have lost their No.1 spot, they still have films from the runner-up position to No.6, which means that they are still proving to be rather damaging to the Korean film market at present. Hopefully the likes of The Host and Fly Daddy can deter any American competition.

A.P.T, which has, well let's face it with all the hype surrounding Ko So-young (고소영) who last appeared in the cinemas in 2003 with Double Agent (이 중간첩) has sank like the Titianic. Unlike her strong reputation her performance is meant to be very poor and uninspiring. On the other hand,  Arang has done a little better but February 29 has opened very poorly, which is not good seeing that this is part of "4 Horror Tales". So, they are planning to release 3 other horror films in the not too distant future;  Forbidden Floor, which will be released on July, 27, Roommates on August, 3 and Dark Forest on August, 10. I hope they have more success, but at least from where I am standing he Korean horror genre looks like it has run out of a little bit of steam. I am confident they can fight back... Come on, it is one of Korea's great  strengths!

OK, The Host has arrived. Has it done well? Well the chart above speaks for itself. From 78% of the screens it has attracted well over one and half million admissions and generating a staggering $10.5 million (just under) in 3-days. In fact it is currently  No.2  in the World Box office. I thought it might make No.1 but the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is firmly placed at the top, but you have to bear in mind the fact that has been released in 44 territories.  The nearest film on the chart that is of real comparisson is at No.5 with Takes From Earthsea from Japan, which took just under $8 million in Japan, but this is still well behind the Korean monstor.

As for the records  it has broken, there are many.

Just three days after setting a record on July 31 by drawing three million viewers in the shortest period of time in domestic box-office history, the film “The Host” also broke the record of number of viewers who watched a movie on weekdays.

Since its opening on June 27, “The Host” drew 892,517 viewers in Seoul and 3.15 million viewers nationwide as of July 31. On July 31 alone, 145,899 viewers watched the film in Seoul and 532,780 viewers nationwide in 620 theaters.

The film drew three million viewers just five days after its opening, and some 151,486 people watched the movie the night before its official opening in theaters.

The previous record-setter, the film “Taegugki,” drew three million viewers eight days after its opening. The most viewers who watched “The Host” on any weekday was 484,422 people nationwide (140,890 in Seoul) on July 28.

”The Host” drew 453,006 people nationwide on July 27, which exceeded the number of viewers who watched the film on its opening day and the previous night.

Source: KBS NEWS (English)

And there are more (though there are some similarities):

Here, the film brought in some 2.7 million viewers in just four days, setting records by opening on the greatest number of screens (620), the highest number of reservations (99 percent), and as the quickest movie to break the 1 million viewer mark (three days). That knocks the previous record-holders into a cocked hat. The previous record for biggest first week was held by "Typhoon" with 1.81 million tickets sold, for biggest one-day showing "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War" with 590,000 viewers. If the trend continues, “The Host” could surpass the 10 million mark in three weeks, which would be faster than the 39 days it took "Taegukgi," and beat in one month the 12.3 million viewers that "The King and the Clown" saw in its recording-breaking 112-day run.

Source: Chosun News (English)

Here is one  more:

It also broke the record for the Number of admissions for one day (Saturday July 29th) with 790,000 admissions smashing the Taegugki's record of 590,000.

Source: Screen daily (Jean Noh) - Subscription required

So where now?

Well as the Chosun news article suggests, it could even break the record held by the King and the Clown. By the third week, there should be some indication of whether it will break the ultimate record. Although everything looks bright now, to take in excess of 12 million admissions is no easy thing and it really depends on word of mouth, which brought The King and the Clown enormous success. Although Typhoon broke records in its opening week, after  3 weeks it only generated 3.5 mililion admissions. For The Host, this is very unlikely seeing the public are very postive about the film, which cannot be said of Typhoon, though there have been some criticsms regarding the graphics, but you can't please everyone.

Internationally it will go to Japan on Sept 2nd on a reported 250 screens. It will then be released in North America in October and will then be released in 7 other countires through Magnolia Pictures. I have tried to get in contact with Magnolia to try and determine a UK release date, or at least have a rough idea when it is going to be released in the UK, but have had no joy. However, I will continue to try and will let you know more when I know more.

Meanwhile the film and its director Bong Joon-ho will make a world tour. Unsurprisingly this began in Japan with an unprecendented welcome. He returns to Korea today and in the not too distant future he will be going to Hong Kong for their International festival and then on to Edinburgh on Aug 14th for the International festival. More news on the festival is found here. But I don't think he will be there for the scheduled screenings, rather a press screening, which is a real shame, but he may stay - I am not sure. I have also heard he will be attending the Frightfest film festvial in London at the end of the month, but this is merely speculation.

He then goes to North America in September to promote the film and he has also been asked to attend the 31st Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness section, which is to be held from Aug 7th. This festival is apparently an open door for the for the North American market, or at least an easier way of getting into the American market. Bong Joon-ho is also going to take part in the Vancouver International film festival, which begins on Aug 19th.

He then returns to Europe in October for three film festivals, which begins with the 39th Sitges International Film Festival, which starts in Spain on Oct 6th. He is then scheduled to vist Brussels International festival of Fantastic film and Fantasporto in Portugal.

Moving on... As for the other films in the box office. Hanbando is still doing relatively well and should hit 4 million admissions, which is great news of the Korean film industry and eraze some ot the Hollywood competiiton, which has been rather powerful at late.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead's man Chest  is still performing well, though the momentum is beginning to die off.

Forbidden Floor has literally hit the floor with 14,642 admissions. CJ were probably hoping to catch some of the public who didn't want to see The Host, or indeed unable to, but as with February 29 it has failed miserably. Although Hanbando has done reasonably well, CJ will no doubt be feeling the heat and I am guessing some heads will begin to start rolling.

This may sound a little strange, but there seems to be some conflicting box office results despite the fact they come from the same source. Below is what I think is more likely to be last weekend's takings. Quite a contrast.

You may ask why I have bothered to put both up, but it takes so long getting all the data so I am not going to just delete it. This is the first time it has happened, so I don't quite know what has happened, but hopefully it will be the last.

Moving on... THe Host is well on the way to make history, since it looks like it will break the all time record currently held by The King and The Clown. The Host remains at No.2 in the world box office with a revenue of $41,215,869 and almost 5.5 million admissions, which was recorded last weekend. It has now according to Chosun been seen by 7.63 million people, which is assuming people haven't seen it twice or even 3 or 4 times.

Meanwhile To Sir, With Love has performed rather well, but far from the likes The Host. Despite strong markeing campaigns Fly, Daddy, Fly is struggeling even with the likes of King and the Clown star Lee Jun-Ki, but the current climate of films are quite a force, so it is expected. According to the second chart there are four Korean films in the  top four, which is very good news to the Korean film industry - I just hope this continues!

As expected The Host is storming ahead for the third week running and remains strongly placed at No.2 in the World Box Office. It sounds like the figures last week were a little premature, since the total box office up to last weekend $45 million, yet  last week it was published it had made just over $41 million.  I thought it was too good to be true, but nonetheless after 3 weeks it has grossed $45 million, which is a staggering achievment. At this stage The King and The Clown made $25 million, so it is well in front at present.

In fact, I have just learnt from Chosun it has set another record;

'The latest Korean blockbuster "The Host" directed by Bong Joon-ho stomped past the 10 million viewer mark on Wednesday. The movie about a monster from Seoul's Han River became only the fourth Korean film to surpass that milestone after "Silmido”, "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War" and "The King and the Clown." But “The Host” set the record for the shortest period in reaching the milestone just 21 days after its release.'

Meanwhile Monster House opens on No.2, though the number of admissions are somewhat lower than the monster in front. That goes for all the films who are fighting to get those people who have had enough of The Host.

Lump of Sugar and Dasepo Naughty Girls open at No.2 and 3, respectively. To Sir with Love moves to No.5 and Fly, Daddy, Fly is sinking fast and Hanbando looks like it will break 20 million if it hasn't already. Not a phenominan, but not exactly a flop either and the intense marketing by CJ has evidently played off.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has had a comfortable outing in Korea, though far from the Tom Cruise star vehicle Mission Impossible 3 , which generated $37.6 million. This is quite interesting since not only did it take a great deal more than its predecessors ($10.6 million and 13.6 million, respectively), but as a whole the film has been disappointing, especially in Japan, but Korea is seen as an exception. 'Only South Korea stands out as a major exception' (Robert Mitchell, Screen International - Aug 11th 2006). Last year, the most successful Hollywood film in Korea was War of the Worlds, which as you all know stars Tom Cruise. So it looks like not only Japan can't get enough of him, though it appears Korea might have more of a crave for him. Not sure if that is necessarily a good thing.

My apologies for not having last weeks box office results last week. Time has been a little too tight over the last few days or so, but we are now back on the ball. You can view last week's box office below but there is no commentary for last week, so please just browse on your own accord - it is pretty easy to digest.

There is no shock as to what film dominates the box office at present. The Host is steaming ahead at $60 million, which means it is almost inevitable it will break the record currently held by last/this years earlier hit, The King and The Clown. Although it was introduced at the Frightfest film festival as the most successful film in Asia ever, it has still got to go a little bit further, but like I said it is only a matter of time. Incedently, the review of The Host will be up by the end of the week.

As for the other films, there are a great deal on show at the moment. Although far behind The Host. No Mercy For The Rude, Ice Bar, Holly Daddy and Lump of Sugar are all at each others throats, which suggests after a dormant spring/early summer period, Korean films are firmly back where they belong - at the top!

CJ Entertainment will be delighted with Lump of Sugar, which has taken on over $6.5 million, which comes after a string of flops, though Hanbando did reasonably well but its horror flicks did no such thing.

The only Hollywood film that has any a real significance at the moment is Monster House. Miami VIce and My Super Ex-Girlfriend haven't really gone anywhere - not surprising really since they are both very poor films.
